This is something I made for fun. Since Christmas coming and all, I thought I’d make a family-friendly version of a story of Doubt. It’s just something silly.
As characters, I chose people with cute names: Ellie, Heart, Slippi (Echi), Lily (Lyon), Happy, Fluffy, Ricky and Unlucky.
This is just for fun, don’t take it seriously. The way the characters are portrayed does not show what I think of them. I added some stuff to their personality to make the story a bit funnier.
Ok, so that’s it. Enjoy!
Once upon a time, there was a group of eight friendly rabbits. They all met in a beautiful and peaceful meadow surrounded by trees.
To the north of the meadow there was a forest of big tall trees with large branches and dark-green leaves that blocked the sun and made it dark.
To the east of the meadow there was a forest of small tress and shrubs with sprouting buds covered with dew.
To the south of the meadow there was a sunny and beautiful forest of tees with flowers in full bloom which gave out a pleasant scent.
To the west of the meadow there was a river with cold and clear water flowing from north to south. Beyond the river was a forest of old trees covered with moss and a big aged tree with ropes hanging from its branches.
One by one, the rabbits all came together in the meadow from different directions:
The first rabbit to arrive was Ellie, from the northern forest. She was the smartest of the rabbits, but she rarely spoke her mind.
The second rabbit to arrive was Heart, from the southern forest. He was the prettiest of the rabbits, but he was also proud and bragging.
The third rabbit to arrive was Slippi, from the eastern forest. She was the funniest of the rabbits, but she never took anything seriously.
The fourth rabbit to arrive was Lily, from the eastern forest. He was the strongest of the rabbits, but he was always afraid.
The fifth rabbit to arrive was Happy, from the western forest. He was the friendliest of the rabbits, but he was also naïve and gullible.
The sixth rabbit to arrive was Fluffy, from the eastern forest. She was the liveliest of the rabbits, but she was also headstrong and unrestrained.
The seventh rabbit to arrive was Ricky, from the southern forest. He was the most courageous of the rabbits, but he was also tricky and cheating.
The eighth rabbit to arrive was Unlucky, from the northern forest. He was the most honest of the rabbits, but he was always sad and pessimistic.
But, the truth is that one of them was actually a wolf in disguise. Every night, as the others fell asleep, the wolf appeared in natural form and took away one of the rabbits into to the forest. During the day, not knowing which the wolf was, the rabbits arranged a meeting. Then, the tribunal decided on the one amongst them that they believed to be the wolf and cast it out of their circle of trust.
If they chose correctly, the rabbits would continue to go on living peacefully in the meadow. If they were wrong, the rabbits would one by one be taken away by the wolf in the forest until there would be none left. This is the story of such a game.
Morning rose upon the camp of the rabbits. It was quiet and still, but something was missing. A loud, fearful voice pierced though the silence:
- Oh, no! Screamed Happy. The wolf took Unlucky away into the forest!
Everyone awoke from their peaceful slumber and gathered around Unlucky’s empty sleeping spot. A pair of tracks went from the camp, out into the southern forest, away from the meadow.
- Guess he really was Unlucky after all, said Slippi with a chuckle.
- What are we going to do? Asked Lily.
- One of us is the wolf! Ricky responded, not afraid to speak his mind. We need to find him and make him leave the meadow!
- But how can we find out who the wolf is? It could be anyone of us. And if we’re wrong we would banish a rabbit, Ellie said, pleading for patience.
- We all need to trust each other! We’re all friends! We can all make it out of this together! Said Happy.
- The tracks go towards the south, into the forest, noticed Fluffy.
- Well, I know it wasn’t me so it must be Ricky! Heart said pointing a finger towards the one he accused.
- What? Ricky retaliated, if I were the wolf, I wouldn’t have taken him back to where I came from.
- Looks like you gave this a lot of thought, Fluffy continued the attack.
- I’m scared! I don’t know what to do! Lily cried.
The meeting continued till dusk, with the rabbits accusing each other. In the end, all seven gathered around a circle holding paws with each other in order to cast their votes as part of the tribunal. Ellie and Happy didn’t vote, but the majority decided that Ricky was the wolf.
- We’re sorry Ricky, but we can no longer accept you in our circle of trust.
- It’s time for you to go.
Lily and Heart who were holding Ricky’s paws let go of him at the same time. Then, the six remaining rabbits closed their circle again, leaving Ricky standing alone on the outside. Disheartened, Ricky lowered his head and set out towards the river. When he reached the shore of the river he turned around towards the other rabbits that were watching him from a distance and said:
- You will all regret this!
He hopped three stones, reached the other shore, passed the aged tree under a ring of rope hanging from one of its branches and vanished into the old forest.
The sun disappeared beyond the horizon and thinking that they would once again be safe, the six remaining rabbits went to sleep.
The sun appeared again on the rabbit’s camp. Even though the first rays on light were shining on the meadow, the air was cold and misty. Someone broke the silence and called:
- Everyone, come quickly!
Ellie, who had woken up the first, woke up all the other rabbits from their sleep to show them something important:
- Heart’s sleeping spot is empty. And there are tracks of his going towards the eastern forest.
Ellie pointed with her paw, the path of Heart’s tracks disappearing into the forest.
- Oh no! Shouted Lily placing his paws on his head.
- The wolf is still among us! Fluffy said quickly.
- But who? Inquired Ellie. And Ricky has already left.
- Ooops! Said Slippi, innocently raising her shoulders and covering her mouth with her paw.
- We shouldn’t suspect each other! We’re all friends! Happy pleaded for peace.
- What are you talking about? Said Fluffy. Someone in this camp is a wolf!
- You are pretty hasty Fluffy. Ellie said.
- Yes, that’s right! Lily had started paying attention to what was going on around him.
- Hasty? Of course I’m hasty! We need to get rid of the wolf! Fluffy snapped.
- Are you mad? Slippi giggled.
The discussion and accusations continued till dusk. The sun was red, half buried under the line of horizon. The five rabbits gathered around a circle holding paws with each other for the tribunal. Happy refused to vote:
- I can’t vote for any of my friends.
But, the rest of the rabbits had decided. Ellie and Slippi let go of Fluffy’s paws and then closed the circle behind them. Fluffy shouted at them in an upset voice:
- You’re all dumb!
She left towards the western forest, reached the river, hopped two stones, passed the aged tree under a ring of rope and disappeared into the old forest.
It went dark, and the four remaining rabbits went to their own sleeping spots.
When the next morning came, the whole meadow looked desolate and murky. Lily, who was the first to wake up, went to look around the camp. He noticed Slippi’s sleeping spot was empty and her tracks went towards the northern forest. Not sure want to do, he woke up Ellie and Happy.
- Look! Slippi’s gone, he said.
- Fluffy wasn’t the wolf either. Ellie spoke, looking concerned and afraid.
- We can’t give up now! Happy tried to be positive.
Lily was shaking and sweating.
- Lily why are you so agitated? Ellie inquired.
- I didn’t do anything! He burst out in a scared voice.
- Why would you say that? You were the first to wake up this morning right?
- No, it wasn’t me! Lily snapped.
The three continued throughout the day. The sun was setting, red and yellow light passing through the trees of the old forest towards the west. Lily, Ellie and Happy all grabbed each other’s paws to hold the tribunal.
- I don’t trust you Lily. Ellie said as she let go of him.
Happy, looked at Lily and Ellie and in a sad disheartened voice, he said:
- I’m sorry.
He let go of Lily’s paw and held Ellie’s. Lily waked away towards the sunset. He reached the river, turned around and looked at the meadow and the two rabbits standing there and watching him. He hopped one stone, passed the aged tree and disappeared into the old forest.
Night came. Happy and Ellie went to their sleeping spots and went to sleep.
Morning was coming. Unable to sleep, Ellie woke up from her sleeping spot and observed her surroundings. It was still dark, the sun not yet being above the line of horizon. Everything was calm and quiet. She could hear no sounds. There was no wind. Not even the nice smell of the trees with flowers was there anymore.
She looked for Happy and saw that his sleeping spot was empty and noticed his tracks going towards the western forest. All alone, Ellie decided to leave the meadow forever and return to where she came from. She got her belongings and set out towards the north.
The forest was still as she remembered it: dark, mysterious and sheltering. In here she felt protected as she could hide from any wolf that she might encounter. She remembered with pleasure the memories she had of this place. But something was missing. It wasn’t the same as before, but she did not know why.
Suddenly, she noticed a pair of tracks on the ground. “Slippi must have come through hereâ€, Ellie thought. A compelling curiosity made Ellie follow the tracks and see where they led. Maybe she would eventually meet with Slippi.
The tracks went on towards north, deeper into the forest. Ellie continued to follow them with caution. Then, she noticed the tracks changed direction towards the west. Wanting to see where they would lead, Ellie headed on the same path, walking alongside the tracks. The earth was a bit muddy, so her paws were getting a little dirty.
Eventually, she reached the river after which stated the western forest of old trees. Ellie looked at Slippi’s tracks and saw that they went into the river, probably continuing on the other side, heading towards the forest of old trees.
“If Slippi changed direction, then it is possible Unlucky and Heart did too and they all actually went into the western forestâ€, Ellie thought. She looked around, not sure if she should keep following the tracks. The sun was just about to rise and there was a bit more light coming through the trees now.
Then, she saw Happy on the other shore of the river.
- Happy, what are you doing here? Asked Ellie. I thought the wolf took you away.
- I’ve always been here. Happy said with a smiling and sincere face.
- What? Why did you leave the meadow? Ellie was confused.
- This is my home. This forest, with old trees and moss. This is my true home. I didn’t leave. But you did.
- What do you mean?
- You left your own forest and went to the meadow. After facing all the problems in there, you returned to the forest you once left and then decided to come here.
- But I didn’t come here for myself. I was just following Slippi’s tracks.
- Look! Happy pointed behind Ellie.
Ellie turned behind and saw her own tracks alongside Slippi’s coming from the forest that was once her home.
- You’ve created your own path into coming here. Whatever is the reason that you decided to come to this place, it was you who chose this path.
Ellie looked at Happy for a moment and then she went into the river to cross it. The water was cold, but refreshing and it washed the mud off her paws. Happy reached a helping paw to her and she took it. Then she went towards the west, disappearing into the forest of old trees.
Afterwards, the first rays of light started shining on the glass cold water of the river.
